IMS/Dry Needling in Coquitlam

What is IMS

Intramuscular stimulation (IMS), also know as dry needling, was introduced in the 1970s by Dr. Chan Gunn in Vancouver, BC. This is a treatment performed by IMS certified physiotherapists to reduce musculoskeletal or neuropathic pain by inserting acupuncture needles into muscles.

Physiotherapists performing intramuscular stimulation (IMS) with an acupuncture needle in a patient's trapezius muscle.

How IMS Works

A registered physiotherapist trained in IMS identifies muscles exhibiting tension or dysfunction and carefully inserts acupuncture needles into these areas, reaching depths of up to several centimeters. This technique elicits a reflex relaxation response in the targeted muscles, promotes microtrauma to enhance blood flow, and facilitates tissue repair by increasing the delivery of oxygen, essential nutrients, and white blood cells. Additionally, the stimulation of nerve sensors within the muscles helps modulate pain signals, contributing to the therapeutic benefits of IMS.

Treatable Conditions

1. Neck and shoulder tension
2. Sciatica
3. Tenis elbow
4. Plantar fasciitis
5. Frozen shoulder
6. Whiplash-associated disorders
7. Limited range of motion
8. Low back pain

Some patients may feel some discomfort throughout IMS treatment, but the treatment sessions are usually short.

Although both treatments utilize the same instruments they are different. Acupuncture is based on Traditional Chinese Medicine, the needles are left in the body for a few minutes and it aims to restore the body’s energy pathways. On the other hand, intramuscular stimulation is based on Conventional Western Medicine, the needles are left in the body for a short amount of time and it targets muscles with tension or dysfunction.

Patients may experience some soreness in the targeted area for up to two days.

Our physiotherapists will incorporate intramuscular stimulation into a patients treatment plan at no additional cost if this treatment is appropriate for the patients condition. In addition, we offer intramuscular stimulation only treatments, which is less costly than physiotherapy.
